_____ The More You Use FINISH LINE, the Smarter it Gets _____
After using FINISH LINE for awhile, most people find that it is so
convenient that they wonder how they ever got along without it.
At first, however, some people find the Guess Window is sometimes
distracting. This is quite understandable because while you getting
accustomed to FINISH LINE, FINISH LINE is learning your writing
habits. Give it time. FINISH LINE will become smarter and smarter
and you probably will soon find the Guess Windows less distracting and
more helpful and a real time-saver.
The remainder of this file contains the menu <F1> help information in
a compressed format so that it takes up less of your disk space.

The Guess Window will never be positioned on the same line as the cursor.If the location selected would obscure any part of the cursor line, an alternate position is automatically used. Press the + or - key to step through the following nine locations. Below CursoräPositions the window just below/above the cursor Above Cursorëso that it follows along as you type. Nearest CorneréPositions the window in the corner of the screen Furthest Cornerånearest to/furthest from the cursor. Top Left Top RightçPositions the window in a corner of the screen. Bottom Left Bottom Right CenterèPositions the window midway down the screen. MiddleèMiddle follows the cursor left-and-right. ÆCenter keeps the window in the center.These Æselections are especially useful on small Æportables where a 40x16 display acts as a window Æinto an 80x25 screen, like the HP 95LX Palmtop. The default setting is Below Cursor. ■_ÇWindowÇ■_ÇForeground ColorÇ■_ "Window:Foreground Color" selects the color of the words inside the Guess Window and inside the Pull-Down Menus. Press the + or - key to step through the sixteen available colors (two intensities if monochrome). ■_ÇWindowÇ■_ÇBackground ColorÇ___ "Window:Background Color" selects the color behind the words inside the Guess Window and inside the Pull-Down Menus. Press the + or - key to step through the eight available colors (two shades if monochrome). ■_ÇWindowÇ■_ÇBordersÇ■_ "Window:Borders" selects the type of border box around the Guess Windows and around the Pull-Down Menus. Press the + or - key to select "Single", "Double" or "None". A border makes the window stand out against a cluttered background. Not having a border allows the window to obscure less area of the screen. If you choose not to have a border, you may wish to experiment with various Window:Background Colors to make the Guess Window prominent. ■_ÇWindowÇ■_ÇBorder ForegroundÇ■_ "Window:Border Foreground" selects the color of the border lines around the Guess Window and around the Pull-Down Menus as well as the color of the key names in the Guess Window. Press the + or - key to step through the sixteen available colors (two intensities if monochrome). ■_ÇWindowÇ■_ÇBorder BackgroundÇ■_ "Window:Border Background" selects the color behind the border around the Guess Window and around the Pull-Down Menus. If you are using a two-key combination HotKey and select the Partial option here, you still must press both keys although only one is displayed. If you are using only single-key HotKeys, the Full and Partial options operate identically. The default is Full. ■_ÇWindowÇ■_ÇVideo SnowÇ■_ Certain video cards are susceptible to a phenomenon known as "Snow" in which random specks are seen on the screen from time to time.When you install FINISH LINE, this selection is set automatically by inspecting which video card is in your computer. Normally you will never have to change this menu selection, but you can if necessary. Fast:ÇFINISH LINE runs as fast as possible.This is normally the çbest setting for all video cards except CGA.If the screen çlooks fine with this setting - don't change it. Avoid:FINISH LINE will take care to avoid causing snow.This is çnormally the best setting for CGA cards.If you still have çsnow on your screen with this setting, the cause of the snow çis probably due to another software program that you are çusing.Check the documentation for your other software. ■_ÇWindowÇ■_ÇBeep SoundÇ■_ FINISH LINE can beep to alert you when the Guess Window pops-up. "Window:Beep Sound" allows you to select whether FINISH LINE will beep and also the tone of the beep.Press a digit 0-9 to select. ë0:Disable Beep ë1:Standard Beep tone ç2-9:Other Beep tones The default is "0", FINISH LINE will not beep. Because there is only one speaker timer that all programs must share, certain applications may not be compatible with options 2-9. ■_ÇGuessÇ■_ â╔■═╗ â║ [Standard Setup]üDefault║ â║How Certainï60%║ â║Min guess lettersç2║ â║Min letters addedç4║ â║Words in Phraseë3║ â║GuessingêAutomatic║ â║Add SpaceÄNo║ â╚■═╝ The selections in the Pull-Down Menu under the heading "Guess" determine under what conditions the Guess Window will pop-up.The Guess Window will only pop-up when all of the conditions are met. Because different peoples' typing speed and habits and personal preferences vary immensely, the conditions under which each person wishes to see the Guess Window vary greatly.Some people prefer to see the potential guess words as often as possible.Others prefer not to be distracted unless it is very likely that the guess is useful and correct.These selections allow you to customize FINISH LINE to your own liking. ■_ÇGuessÇ■_Ç[Standard Setup]Ç■_ "Guess:[Standard Setup]" is a short-cut way to set the other items in the "Guess" pull-down menu to one of four default settings. Often:âThe Guess Window will pop-up quite frequently.Use ïthis option if you would like to take advantage of ïFINISH LINE HotKeys as much as possible and are not ïdistracted by frequently seeing Guess Windows. Rarely:éThe Guess Window will only pop-up if it is very likely ïthat it contains the word that you are typing.Use this ïoption if you want FINISH LINE to Pop-Up Guess Windows ïautomatically, but don't want to be bothered by too many ïGuess Windows with incorrect guesses. Default:üShows more guess words than the "Rarely" selection but ïnot as frequently as the "Often" selection. Manual:éUse this option if you do not want the Guess Windows to ïPop-Up automatically.The Guess Windows will only ïPop-Up when you press the first key of a two-key ïcombination of Guess HotKeys. Often, one of these four selections will be adequate. If you prefer the Guess Window to pop-up even more often or more rarely, you can change one or more of the items that follow in this menu.Use one of these standard settings as a starting point, then try various changes to the other "Guess" menu items. ■_ÇGuessÇ■_ÇHow CertainÇ■_ The Guess Window will only pop-up if the probability that a guess is correct is greater than the "Guess:How Certain" percentage. - If you think the Guess Window pops-up too often with incorrect üguesses, use a higher setting. - If you wish the Guess Window would pop-up more often, use a ülower setting. Generally settings between 20% to 90% work best, the default is 60%. The "HotKeys:Max Guesses" selection also affects how often the Guess Window pops-up because the more words that can fit in the Guess Window, the more likely that one of them is correct. ■_ÇGuessÇ■_ÇMin guess lettersÇ■_ "Guess:Min guess letters" selects the minimum number of letters you must type in the current word before a Guess Window may appear.If you select "0", a Guess Window can appear before you have typed any letters in the next word.Selecting "1" through "9" requires that many letters to be typed before the Guess Window may pop-up.The default is "2". For example, If you select "3": while you are typing the word "Multimedia", the Guess Window will not pop-up until after you type the letter "l". ■_ÇGuessÇ■_ÇMin letters addedÇ■_ "Guess:Min letters added" selects the minimum number of letters that a HotKey will add.Potential guess words that would add fewer letters are not included in the Guess Window. You may not wish to be bothered with Guesses that use a HotKey to replace only two or even three letters.Instead you may prefer to be shown the Guess Window only when a HotKey can save you from typing several letters. You may select from "1" through "9", the default is "4". ■_ÇGuessÇ■_ÇWords in PhraseÇ■_ "Guess:Words in Phrase" selects the maximum number of words that may appear as a phrase in the Guess Window. You may select from "1" through "9", the default is "3". Selecting 1 will restrict all guesses to a single word.Selecting 2-9 will restrict phrases to at most that many words. ■_ÇGuessÇ■_ÇGuessingÇ■_ You can temporarily disable FINISH LINE by setting "Guessing" to "Disabled".For example, you may wish to disable FINISH LINE while using a certain program. If you find the Guess Window windows helpful but you are distracted when they pop-up automatically, you can set "Guessing" to "Manual". With this setting the Guess Window will only pop-up when you press the first key of a two-key combination of Guess HotKeys. For example, if you use "Ctrl Top Row" for "HotKeys:[Standard Setup]": ü<Ctrl><1>ü<Ctrl><2>ü<Ctrl><3>ü<Ctrl><4>üetc. then the Guess Window will only pop-up while you press the <Ctrl> key. At that point you may hold the <Ctrl> key down and press the number key corresponding to the guess word you would like.Or you may simply release the <Ctrl> key and the window will disappear. If any of the Guess HotKeys use only a single key (not a two-key combinations) then the Guess Window works automatically whether "Guessing" is set to "Manual" or "Automatic". Generally when using Manual Guessing, it is best to set "How Certain" to a very low percentage and set "Min guess letters" to 0. ■_ÇGuessÇ■_ÇAdd SpaceÇ■_ Setting "Guess:Add Space" to "Yes" will cause a blank space to be added after the guess word each time you press a Guess HotKey. -The advantage is that you do not have to press the <space> bar übefore beginning the next word. -The disadvantage is that you may not want a blank space übecause you wish to change the end of the word.For example, üyou may wish to use a different plural or verb tense form. Some people find that Add Space is a convenience.Since FINISH LINE learns the plurals and tenses you use, it normally guesses correctly anyway.For the rare situations it doesn't, it is easy to backspace to delete. Other people simply find it confusing to have the blank space automatically added and prefer to type it themselves. Notice that every key is treated as a unique key by FINISH LINE. Ç- For example, you could use the right Shift key "RShift" as a éFINISH LINE HotKey (or as part of a two-key combination). éThe left Shift key "LShift" will continue to function normally. Ç- To use a FINISH LINE HotKey, you must always use the same éphysical key you entered in the menu.For two-key combinations, éyou MUST press both keys in the SAME ORDER. Some portable machines with small keyboards do not have a separate numeric pad.Instead they use special keys (sometimes colored blue) that are accessed with a special (blue) Fn function key.You can use these as FINISH LINE HotKeys, but you may prefer to use HotKey combinations that are easier to press. Some large keyboards have even more keys between the keyboard and the numeric pad.FINISH LINE always refers to these keys by name (Ins, Del, Home, End, PgUp, PgDn and arrows ,,,), which differs from the corresponding numeric pad keys names "numpad0", "numpad9", etc. You can also use Function keys <F1> through <F12> alone or in combinations as HotKeys.Be careful to avoid combinations that are also used by your software applications.(Remember not to confuse <F1> with "keybrd1" or "numpad1".) Touch typists may prefer to use the "Home Row" standard setting in which all the HotKeys are readily available without moving your fingers from the "home row".Another handy trick is that <Ctrl><H>, also on the home row, works as a backspace key in many word processors and other software. Many people like to use single keys as HotKeys.There are several rarely used keys such as <CapsLk> and <ScrLk> that can be used.The "Grey Keys" standard setting uses single grey-colored keys. All but one of the [Standard Setup] selections are similar in that they define a list of HotKeys for normal keyboards.The exception is the "Special-Purpose" setting which is specifically designed for non-standard and emulated keyboards.Most keyboards will work with any setting.However, some keyboards, such as certain types used by handicapped persons, require the "Special-Purpose" setting.This setting is suggested only if HotKeys do not work properly with the other settings. All settings permit you to change each individual HotKey as you wish and permit HotKeys to consist of one key or a combination of two keys. However, the Special-Purpose setting restricts the first key of a two-key combination to be <Ctrl>, <Alt> or <Shift>.This setting also does not allow non-standard keys like <CapsLock> to be used as a HotKey.Some combinations, such as <Ctrl><Tab>, are also not available with the Special-Purpose setting.The minus "-" key on the top row is the default HotKey used to Pop-up the Menu when the Special-Purpose Setting is selected. The choice of HotKeys is ultimately up to you.Experiment! A convenient set of HotKeys can make FINISH LINE even easier to use. ■_ÇHotKeysÇ■_ÇMenu HotKeyÇ■_ When you press the Menu HotKey, the Pull-Down Menus appear on the screen allowing you to customize FINISH LINE to your personal preferences.(If you are in a video mode that is incompatible with the Pull-Down Menus when you press the Menu HotKey, the menu will not appear immediately, but will appear as soon as you enter a compatible mode.) The default Menu HotKey is <Ctrl><Tab>. This "HotKeys:Menu HotKey" menu item allows you to change which key(s) are used as the Menu HotKey.Press <Enter> ─┘and then press any key on the keyboard.If you want to use a two-key combination, hold down the first key while pressing the second.You may use virtually any key(s) on the keyboard, but you probably will want to avoid combinations that you use for other purposes. If you ever forget the setting of the Menu HotKey, type at the DOS prompt>åFINISH ■_ÇHotKeysÇ■_ÇUndo HotKeyÇ■_ If you mistakenly press a Guess HotKey, you can press the Undo HotKey. The Undo HotKey removes the characters added by last Guess HotKey. Undo only works immediately after pressing a HotKey.If you press any other keys after the Guess HotKey and then press the Undo HotKey, nothing will happen. There is no default Undo HotKey."None" is shown in the menu to indicate that the feature is disabled. To enable the Undo feature, use the "HotKeys:Undo HotKey" menu item to select the key(s) to be used as the Undo HotKey.Press <Enter> ─┘ and then press any key or on the keyboard.If you want to use a two-key combination, hold down the first key while pressing the second. To disable the Undo feature, press <Del> at the "HotKeys:Undo HotKey" menu item. ■_ÇHotKeysÇ■_ÇLearn HotKeyÇ■_ Normally FINISH LINE will automatically learn all the words that you type.However, if you wish for FINISH LINE to learn only certain words, you can select a Learn HotKey. By selecting a Learn HotKey, automatic learning is disabled and FINISH LINE will learn new words only when you press the Learn HotKey.Each time you press the Learn HotKey, FINISH LINE will learn the word at the cursor. - Press the Learn HotKey at anytime while typing in a word. - Or position the cursor anywhere on the screen where a word is üdisplayed and press the Learn HotKey (to avoid retyping the word). There is no default Learn HotKey."Automatic" is shown in the menu to indicate that automatic learning is enabled. To select a Learn HotKey, use the "HotKeys:Learn HotKey" menu item to set the key(s) to be used as the Learn HotKey.Press <Enter> ─┘ and then press any key or on the keyboard.If you want to use a two-key combination, hold down the first key while pressing the second.If you wish to start fresh so that FINISH LINE only knows the words that you teach it, you can delete all the words learned up to this point using the menu item "Misc:Delete all words" To revert back to automatic learning, press <Del> at the "HotKeys:Learn HotKey" menu item. ■_ÇHotKeysÇ■_ÇMax GuessesÇ■_ "HotKeys:Max Guesses" selects the maximum number of guesses that may be shown in the Guess Window at any one time.Because each guess shown uses a unique HotKey, this selection also determines the number of Guess HotKey selections that are available (which also appear in this Pull-Down Menu). If you choose "1", the Guess Window will always contain only the single most probable word.If you choose "2" through "9", the Guess Window will contain at most that many guess words. The greater this setting, the more frequently Guess Windows will appear because the more words that can fit in the Guess Window, the more likely that one of them is correct.To change the overall likelihood that causes the Guess Windows to pop-up, adjust the "Guess:How Certain" menu item (which also appear in this Pull-Down Menu). ■_ÇHotKeysÇ■_ÇGuess 1 Key...Guess 9 KeyÇ■_ As you are working, the Guess Window may pop-up with one or more possible words that you may be in the process of typing.To select one of these words to be completed automatically by FINISH LINE, you press the HotKey corresponding to the word desired.The most likely word is always listed first and corresponds to the "Guess 1 Key", subsequent words correspond to subsequent Guess Keys. This "HotKeys:Guess N Key" menu item allows you to change which key(s) are used as the HotKey.Press <Enter> ─┘and then press any key on the keyboard.If you want to use a two-key combination, hold down the first key while pressing the second.You may use virtually any key(s) on the keyboard, but you probably will want to avoid combinations that you use for other purposes. You can select up to 9 different Guess HotKeys for 9 different potential guesses.The number of Guess HotKeys is determined by the "HotKeys:Max Guesses" setting (which also appear in this Pull-Down Menu). ■_ÇCharactersÇ■_ â╔■ ═╗ â║ [Standard Setup]äNormal║ â║CapitalizationêSmart║ â║Apostrophe 'èSmart║ â║Hyphen -ÄSmart║ â║Underscore _èSmart║ â║Backslash \ìYes║ â║Period .ÄSmart║ â║Digits 0-9îSmart║ â║Exceptionsæ║ â╚■ ═╝ The selections in the Pull-Down Menu under the heading "Characters" select whether or not various characters are permitted within Pop-Up Guess words. ■_ÇCharactersÇ■_Ç[Standard Setup]Ç■_ This is a short-cut way to set all of the other selections in this Pull-Down menu to one of two default settings. Normal:éFor typical writing, Pop-Up Guess words use standard ïEnglish conventions. Programmer: For writing software, Pop-Up Guess words are permitted ïto contain underscores and not hyphens (minus signs). For most applications, one of these two selections will be adequate. However, you may find it beneficial to first select one of these standard settings and then individually change a few of the items below. ■_ÇCharactersÇ■_ÇCapitalizationÇ■_ You may choose to treat capitalization of letters in one of three manners. Sensitive: Always treat capital and lower-case letters differently. èTypically this is the best choice for most purposes. Smart:éUse conventional English rules to determine if the first èletter may be capitalized or lower-case. Ignore:üAlways match capital and lower-case letters, thus if a èword was initially typed like "THIS", it can be used as èa Guess Word for "this". The default setting is "Sensitive". ■_ÇCharactersÇ■_ÇApostrophe 'Ç■_ You may choose to treat apostrophes as part of a Guess Word or as a separator between potential Guess Words. Yes:ÇApostrophes always included in Guess Word. å- Contractions such as "wouldn't" will appear as Guess Words. No:üApostrophes never included in Guess Word. å- Guess Words between quoted strings such as 'hello world' do ênot include the apostrophe. If you have other resident programs that require to be loaded last (such as old versions of SideKick) or require to be loaded first, do so and load FINISH LINE before or after them. If you are using a keyboard driver program, such as the DOS KEYBxx foreign language drivers, make sure to load it before FINISH LINE. Any mouse drivers should also be loaded before FINISH LINE. While popped-up, some (but not most) resident programs will not allow FINISH LINE windows to pop-up.If this happens you may wish to load FINISH LINE before this other resident program. Finally, you may wish to consider which programs you might want to unload from memory from time to time to free up memory space for other applications.Nearly all resident programs (including FINISH LINE) should be unloaded in the reverse order they are loaded in. Thus, resident programs that you may later wish to unload should generally be loaded last.
